About Our Puzzles

Inspired by the writings of George Perec, our founder Philip A. Morganelli (PAM) purchased his first scroll saw in late 2010. Twelve years later he fully committed to the creation of heirloom quality puzzles, launching Turning Taxis Plywood Puzzles from his garage during the Spring of 2023.

Our typical process begins with dry mounting a high quality print of the puzzle artwork to premium 6mm 5-ply Baltic Birch plywood and protecting with a thin matte laminate. Once the adhesive has fully cured, the puzzle blank is trimmed to size and entirely hand cut by the founder of Turning Taxis Plywood Puzzles using a Dewalt DW788 scroll saw fitted with ultra-thin puzzle specific blades. The vast majority of pieces are cut improvisationally and without patterns, imbuing each puzzle with a unique and jazz-like grace. Any exceptions to this procedure (special art media, acrylic puzzles, hand painted puzzles, etc) will be noted for those individual products.

Once complete, each puzzle is personally assembled, inspected, and the backside polished and signed/dated (when possible). The puzzle is then packaged in an appropriately sized box (two piece jewelry boxes for mini and small puzzles, premium rigid two piece boxes for medium, large, and extra large puzzles). Respecting the tradition of classic hand cut puzzles, we do not include a solution image with our puzzles, instead opting to brand our boxes with a simple logo and a label listing puzzle details.

While we selectively offer holiday themed "unlimited edition" hand painted puzzles, the majority of our work is available as an exclusive edition of one. Once a particular artwork has sold it will never be relisted in any size or for any price.

All puzzles are produced, inventoried, and shipped from Placerville, CA, a charming Gold Country town at the foothills of the Sierra.
